Why EverForth for Criminal Defence?
When you contact EverForth Law about a criminal matter, you can communicate directly with the lawyer handling your case rather than working through a large intake department before reaching counsel. Criminal matters do not always arise during office hours, text inquiries are accepted 24/7, and urgent matters can be identified clearly in the message. EverForth Law also provides clear information about the proposed scope of work and applicable legal fees before a retainer is finalized.
Wade Ma represents accused persons in criminal proceedings and has experience dealing with contested trials, witness credibility, cross-examination, Charter and evidentiary issues, bail, sentencing, and negotiations with Crown prosecutors.

Criminal Defence in Calgary
Being charged with a criminal offence can affect your liberty, employment, family, reputation, immigration status, ability to travel, and future opportunities.
A criminal charge is not a conviction. The Crown must prove the allegation according to the applicable criminal standard, and every case must be assessed on its own evidence.
EverForth Law represents individuals facing criminal charges in Calgary and elsewhere in Alberta. Depending on the circumstances, representation may involve reviewing disclosure, identifying weaknesses in the Crown's case, considering Charter issues, negotiating with the Crown, seeking withdrawal or other resolution where appropriate, preparing sentencing submissions, or defending the allegation at trial.
You deal directly with the lawyer responsible for your case.

Examples of Criminal Charges We Defend
Assault and Domestic Assault.
Assault allegations can arise from disputes involving spouses, partners, family members, acquaintances, or strangers. Domestic-related charges can also result in restrictive release conditions affecting where an accused person may live and whether they may communicate with a spouse or family member. These cases may require careful review of witness statements, police evidence, photographs, recordings, medical evidence, credibility issues, self-defence, and the surrounding circumstances.

Sexual Assault and Sexual Offences.
Sexual offence prosecutions can involve complex evidentiary and procedural rules, including issues relating to credibility, reliability, consent, prior statements, electronic communications, forensic evidence, and the admissibility of particular evidence. EverForth Law represents clients facing serious and sensitive sexual offence allegations and approaches these matters with detailed preparation and close review of the evidence.

Bail Hearings and Release Conditions.
If you have been detained following an arrest, a bail hearing may determine whether you are released and on what conditions. EverForth Law can assist with contested bail hearings, release plans, sureties where applicable, and issues involving release conditions.

Theft, Fraud and Property Offences.
EverForth Law can assist with allegations involving theft, fraud, possession of property obtained by crime, mischief, break and enter, and other property-related offences. These cases may involve detailed review of financial records, communications, electronic evidence, surveillance, contracts, or other documentary material.

Uttering Threats and Criminal Harassment.
Allegations involving threatening communications, repeated contact, online messages, former partners, or workplace disputes can depend heavily on context and the precise language alleged. Text messages, social-media communications, recordings, and the surrounding circumstances may become important evidence.

Impaired Driving and Driving-Related Criminal Charges.
Impaired-driving allegations can create consequences involving a criminal record, licence suspension, employment, insurance, and mobility. EverForth Law provides information and representation relating to impaired driving, DUI allegations, roadside sanctions, and related driving matters.

Sentencing and First Offences.
A first criminal charge can still carry significant consequences. Where a guilty plea or finding of guilt occurs, sentencing may involve consideration of the offence, the accused person’s circumstances, criminal record if any, rehabilitation, restitution, treatment, employment, family responsibilities, and other mitigating or aggravating factors.

Charged With a Crime? What Should You Do?
If you have been arrested, detained, or charged with a criminal offence, you should generally avoid explaining the allegations to police before obtaining legal advice, because anything you say may become evidence. If you are arrested or detained, section 10(b) of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms protects your right to retain and instruct counsel without delay and to be informed of that right. You should also preserve potentially relevant evidence, including text messages, photographs, videos, emails, social-media communications, receipts, and location information, rather than deleting or altering it.
If you have been released on conditions, follow those conditions carefully even if you disagree with them, as an alleged breach can result in additional charges; legal advice can be obtained about whether a condition may be changed.
Finally, once Crown disclosure becomes available, it should be carefully reviewed because the police allegation represents only one side of the case, and meaningful advice about resolution, trial, or potential defences depends on understanding the evidence against you.

Criminal Charges, Immigration Consequences and the Evidence
Criminal proceedings can have consequences extending beyond the criminal court process, particularly for permanent residents and other non-citizens. The immigration consequences of a conviction may depend on the offence, sentence, immigration status, and surrounding circumstances, so anyone who is not a Canadian citizen should advise their criminal lawyer about their immigration status at an early stage. Learn more about criminal charges, deportation and immigration consequences in Canada.
There is also no single defence strategy that applies to every criminal case. Depending on the allegations, important issues may include witness credibility and reliability, inconsistent statements, identification evidence, surveillance or video evidence, text messages and electronic communications, police notes and body-worn camera evidence, search and seizure, statements made to police, right-to-counsel issues, voluntariness, self-defence, consent, expert or forensic evidence, delay, disclosure deficiencies, and whether the Crown can prove every element of the offence beyond a reasonable doubt. The first step is identifying what the prosecution must prove and carefully examining the available evidence actually establishes it.

Calgary Criminal Court Representation
EverForth Law represents clients facing criminal charges in Calgary and can assist throughout the criminal court process, from the early stages of a police investigation through resolution, trial, or sentencing. Representation may include advice following arrest or release, bail hearings, first appearances, review of Crown disclosure, negotiations with Crown prosecutors, applications to vary release conditions, Charter applications, trial preparation, criminal trials, guilty pleas, sentencing hearings, and related post-conviction advice where appropriate.
For clients appearing before the Calgary Courts Centre or dealing with criminal charges investigated by the Calgary Police Service, obtaining legal advice early can help clarify the next steps, identify important deadlines and release conditions, and determine what evidence must be reviewed before decisions are made about resolution or trial. EverForth Law provides criminal defence representation from its downtown Calgary office and works directly with clients throughout their matters.
