Wade Ma is a Calgary family violence lawyer and the founder of EverForth Law. He represents clients in Calgary and throughout Alberta in matters involving domestic violence allegations, Emergency Protection Orders, criminal charges, no-contact conditions, parenting disputes, separation, and related family court proceedings.
Family violence matters can involve criminal law and family law at the same time. A criminal charge or protection order may affect contact with a spouse or children, access to the family home, parenting arrangements, immigration status, employment, and ongoing family litigation.
Wade practises in both criminal defence and family law. He assists clients where domestic assault allegations, EPO proceedings, bail or release conditions, parenting disputes, and separation issues overlap, helping clients understand how one proceeding may affect another.
His approach is practical and evidence-focused: reviewing the allegations, identifying immediate legal risks, addressing urgent court issues, and developing a coordinated strategy across related criminal and family proceedings.
If you are facing family violence allegations, a domestic assault charge, an Emergency Protection Order, or overlapping criminal and family proceedings in Alberta, you can speak directly with Wade about the next steps in your case.

When Criminal Law and Family Violence Proceedings Intersect
Family violence matters in Calgary and throughout Alberta can involve several legal processes at once. A single incident may lead to a police investigation, criminal charges, bail or release conditions, an Emergency Protection Order, parenting litigation, and disputes about the family home.
Under s. 265 of the Criminal Code, assault includes the intentional application of force without consent and certain attempts or threats to apply force. Sections 266, 267 and 268 address assault, assault with a weapon or causing bodily harm, and aggravated assault. At the same time, Alberta’s Protection Against Family Violence Act creates a separate civil protection regime, including Emergency Protection Orders where statutory requirements are met.
Criminal and EPO proceedings are legally distinct, but the same evidence may become important in both. Police reports, 911 recordings, photographs, text messages, witness statements, medical records, affidavits, and prior communications may also become relevant to parenting or other family-law proceedings.
Where criminal charges are laid, Crown disclosure may contain evidence directly relevant to the family dispute, including police notes, complainant statements, photographs, recordings, and video. The use of that material outside the criminal proceeding can raise separate issues involving disclosure, confidentiality, and admissibility.
Bail and no-contact conditions can also immediately affect family-law arrangements. Conditions restricting communication or attendance at the family residence may affect parenting exchanges, access to children, possession of the home, and communication between separating spouses. A family court order does not necessarily override a criminal release condition, and a variation may be required before contact can lawfully occur.
For this reason, a Calgary family violence lawyer handling overlapping criminal and family matters should consider the proceedings together. Wade Ma practises in both criminal defence and family law and assists clients in Calgary and throughout Alberta with matters involving criminal charges, Emergency Protection Orders, Crown disclosure, release conditions, parenting disputes, and separation-related litigation.

Experience Across Criminal and Family Violence Proceedings
As a Calgary family violence lawyer, Wade Ma has experience with family violence matters at multiple stages of the legal process, including peace bonds, conditional discharges, sentencing hearings, criminal trials, Emergency Protection Order proceedings, bail and release conditions, and related family-law disputes in Calgary and throughout Alberta.
Family violence cases often do not stay within one courtroom. A criminal allegation may begin with police involvement, continue through Crown disclosure and negotiations, and later affect an EPO hearing, parenting arrangements, separation, or access to the family home.
Wade has acted in both contested matters and negotiated resolutions, including peace bonds and conditional discharges. These outcomes can be particularly important where a client is concerned about employment, professional licensing, immigration consequences, travel, or the effect of a criminal record on later family proceedings. A peace bond does not amount to a criminal conviction, while a conditional discharge may allow an accused who is found guilty to avoid a conviction if the statutory requirements are met.
The form of resolution can also matter beyond the criminal case. Admissions, findings, release conditions, and the existence or absence of a conviction may later become relevant to parenting litigation, EPO proceedings, immigration advice, professional regulation, or future court applications.
Wade also has experience engaging directly with Crown prosecutors through Early Case Resolution (ECR) discussions, seeking efficient and proportionate resolutions at an early stage where the evidence and circumstances support doing so.
At EverForth Law, the focus in Calgary and Alberta family violence matters is therefore not only on resolving the immediate criminal charge, but on understanding how the outcome may affect the client’s family, career, immigration position, reputation, and subsequent legal proceedings.

Family Violence, Assault & Protection Order Matters
Family violence allegations can lead to criminal charges, Emergency Protection Order proceedings, release conditions, and related family-law consequences. Wade Ma assists clients in Calgary and throughout Alberta where criminal and family proceedings overlap, including assault allegations, sexual assault charges, EPO applications, parenting disputes, and no-contact restrictions.
Family violence incidents may result in charges under ss. 265–268 of the Criminal Code, including common assault, assault causing bodily harm, or aggravated assault. Wade assists with police investigations, bail and release conditions, Crown disclosure, peace bond negotiations, trials, sentencing, and resolutions such as conditional discharges.

Emergency Protection Orders (EPOs)
Sexual assault cases can involve complex questions of consent, credibility, prior communications, disclosure, and admissibility of evidence. Wade represents accused persons through investigation, disclosure review, pre-trial applications, trial preparation, and trial, while considering the employment, immigration, family, and reputational consequences that may arise alongside the criminal case.
